Skills
The Skills section offers participants the chance to either enhance an existing skill or explore something new. This section aims to spark new interests or refine current ones. These activities, which are often intellectually stimulating or creatively engaging, can include hobbies, vocational or job-related skills, as well as social, individual, or cultural pursuits. Participants are encouraged to engage with experienced individuals in these activities, allowing them to share their passion and expertise. Participants can choose to start a completely new activity or improve their proficiency in an activity they already practice.
*Participants must do their activity either 1 hour each week or 2 hours every two weeks for the minimum number of weeks required. For example, a Silver Award Participant can do 1 hour of activity weekly during 26 weeks or 2 hours of activity every fortnight, such that, in the end, 26 hours of activity have been completed.
Do NOT forget to record activities in your log book and make your assessor sign at the end of each session. It is also recommended to keep pictures of your activities or upload them on the ORB.
Examples of SMART goals:
Language: Over the course of the 26 weeks, I aim to improve my ability in Arabic. I, with the use of the internet, aim to go from having no knowledge of Arabic at all to being able to read and write a small amount of Arabic that a native Arabic speaker can understand. I aim to be able to produce a short essay about myself, in Arabic, that can be understood by my assessor, who is a native Arabic speaker.
MUN: I will attend the Model United Nations for the next 13 weeks. By week 3 I want to have an understanding of the MUN meeting procedures. By week 6 I want to have an understanding of all basic documents- position papers, resolution papers, etc- and be able to write them. By week 13 I want to be able to talk confidently and competently to a crowd with a prepared speech in hand, and be able to have a moderate improvisation.
Online training: I will improve my skills in creating animations and short films on Adobe after effects and Premiere. This will be done through online courses on udemy.com. I will spend at least one hour per week for the next 26 weeks and my assessor (an I.T. teacher in our school) will review my progress on a regular basis. If I complete the course in less than 26 weeks, then I will start a follow-up course in consultation with my Award leader and Assessor.
Guitar: I would like to continue playing guitar, and achieve a high distinction in my grade 4 exam, which is in May 2024 I also need to be confident in playing the C minor chord which is common in one of my chosen songs, as well as in my theory work.
